Business Parents – How to Balance Business, Tantrums, Boredom and Profits in 3 Minutes a Day…

Business parents here’s 7 ways to grow your business and keep it sustainable, when you are constantly filling the fridge, lose track of the days and pray for the school term to start again so you can get back to making money to pay for the next holiday.

It’s not just business mums that take the strain in the school holidays. We often hear from INsiders who are parents that have to juggle childcare, business growth, networking, admin, sales, employees, training and profits.

How do you grow your business and not lose your sanity in the school holidays?

Let’s assume you’ve got 3 minutes locked in the loo to read this, so let’s make it quick and tangible stuff you can do that will grow your business, your confidence and have you ahead of the competition before the start of September – if it’s too much to ask to read all this in one go, just save it and read a bullet point each day;

Each point is a one a day action. You are busy, however please enjoy these times because they go so fast and while it’s impossible to keep them happy, watered and fed without a few tears, rain drops or dropped ice cream you are doing your best, so let’s make it easier for you business parents….

  1. Follow the right people. Think of your perfect customer. The one that promotes you, pay straight away, tell the world about you and buy every month. How did you get them? Just think about it. Do nothing else.
  2. Now you know who they are, how did you meet them? You’ve got 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Who else fits that remit? Who could you email/text/message on LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram and start a conversation? (I’m presuming you are actually on the loo or battle screaming kids fighting over a pointless toy and a phone call is not that practical. However phone calls are fast, and work, if you are nervous to do that and find yourself thinking “Mandie, what do I say?” post to INsiders and I/We will guide you okay? You aren’t alone.)
  3. Don’t hide who you are! I have coached so many business parents who hide the school holiday battle for control of your time, why are you doing that? Business owners and professionals need to own who they are, how they live, what they present to the world and truly own it! If you are currently answering emails at the park while your 2 darlings fight over a swing, be honest about that. You can be professional and rock up to every need of your clients and not lose yourself in the process. I have Lupus. It’ s never stopped me from working and delivering to my clients. I’m honest about that, do you know why? Because if someone can’t respect my need to respect my body then they are probably not the right client for me. Own who you are trust me the right clients will love you for it. This has a knock on effect in society. We’ve for too long pretended it’s all fine when it’s not. INsiders know they can talk about anything and be respected and supported. If you aren’t honest how will you get the support you need?
  4. No one need know you are not in a boardroom making a few million before elevenses, right? So don’t be so available. Some benefit from splitting up their time and others are better to follow. Which are you? Own it and work into it. Not against it.
  5. Go back to point one and point two and ask yourself how strong was your communication to that potential customer? So weak it was ignored or strong enough to evoke action on their part?   6. Go to your perfect client’s favourite platform and follow more like them. There’s a good chance you are in the same groups or following similar feeds to existing clients so start there. Look up your favourite customer and see who they follow and talk to. Connect. Don’t blanket connect with everyone. Be selective. Really think back to point number one and your favourite client. You may not have time to breath let alone brush your teeth or network but plenty of lucky business owners (who’s children have grown up or who don’t have children) are still networking. Who do you know that is out there networking in your area/industry/sector. What events are they at? Look up their social media and see who is commenting on their posts and connect with them. Again, not blanket connect. Get really focused. Remind yourself of your perfect clients LinkedIn Profile. What stands out to you?
  7. This needs more time but for September (before the Halloween half term holidays get your marketing sorted! Grab a notebook in the 2 minutes left and write down things you could blog about. I have been using blogging to grow businesses for so many years. It doesn’t matter what happens with Tech, AI, the world; humans will still want certain parameters to be met and blogging will continue to meet these. Yes, you may need to deliver it differently but know what matters to those people / customers / companies / perfect clients from point one. What pain points did they share.   8. Bonus time…. go live. I know you want to hide, but if you are really owning point 3 then go live at the park, zoo, beach, on the sofa under 2 ton of Lego and a small child and share top tips and advice that resonate with your target audiences. Be useful, relevant and interesting. Think about the best content on socials, it is rarely polished. It is real. It is real people sharing real things. You can do that. I can teach you.
  9. Bonus bonus time…no seriously I can help you go live. When my 2 were younger around the holiday when the phone was off for 26 days (and yes, I still made money and new business – and I can teach you how too.) I would go live. I would talk about a client who had emailed that day and how I’d fixed their mindset, lack of mojo, lack of accountability, poor sales, employee who won’t do as they are told to, etc and it would be short and sweet and there for prosperity. You need to be consistent so you need to choose a route to market that works for you when you are busy, because in September you will be busy with a ton of clients if you get this right.
